New York, NY – [December 4, 2024] – The Center for Global Enterprise (CGE) is proud to announce the launch of the Institute for Advanced Enterprise AI (IAEAi), a new non-profit research organization dedicated to helping business leaders tackle complex challenges with reliable, explainable AI. The IAEAi is set to redefine how enterprises use AI by collaborating on applied research activities yielding solutions that are both powerful and transparent. Collaboration will give decision-makers the clarity and confidence to make high-stakes business choices.
The new Institute is led by Dave Ferrucci, the award-winning Artificial Intelligence researcher who founded and led the IBM Watson team from its inception through its landmark success in defeating the best human players on Jeopardy! in 2011. Watson’s victory marked the start of a revolution in advancing machine intelligence.
As artificial intelligence becomes embedded in essential sectors, from logistics and cybersecurity to healthcare and education, businesses are increasingly aware of the need for AI systems that are explainable and accountable. Understanding how AI arrives at its decisions—including the data sources, statistics, and underlying logic—is critical for companies to build trust in AI and deploy it effectively.
However, the desire to harness the extraordinary power of Generative AI (GenAI) in the enterprise has been tempered by the challenges and complexities of applying it effectively in operations where high levels of reliability, accuracy, and transparency are essential. While standard language models can handle simpler queries, they often falter with the more intricate demands of enterprise-level decision-making. The IAEAi is dedicated to research exploring AI solutions that address these challenges. The IAEAi’s advanced AI expertise not only delivers accurate answers but also explains them in a way that executives can understand and trust.
Ferrucci and his world-class team will be guided by a distinguished advisory board of business leaders and experts from the AI and academic communities. Members include Nobel Laureate Michael Spence; Jim Breyer, Founder and CEO of Breyer Capital; David J. Kappos, a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore; and Mike Crowe, retired Chief Information Officer at Colgate-Palmolive Company. This advisory board brings unparalleled expertise and insight to ensure the institute’s initiatives align with the needs of businesses and society while advancing innovation responsibly.
"AI has the potential to transform decision-making, but only if it can truly understand and adapt to the challenges at hand," said Samuel J. Palmisano, chairman of the Center for Global Enterprise and former IBM chairman. "As Mike Tyson famously said, ‘Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.’ In business, every CEO has a plan, but unexpected challenges come at them fast. With the IAEAi, we’re helping leaders prepare for those ‘punches’ by recommending AI systems that not only perform under pressure but also offer clear, explainable insights. We want AI that businesses can depend on in any situation and can adapt to complex, evolving situations in real-time.”
The IAEAi’s AI platform combines advanced language models with a unique deterministic reasoning engine to ensure that the answers provided aren’t just accurate but also traceable. This blend of technology allows the IAEAi to deliver AI solutions that connect seamlessly to enterprise applications, simplifying the process for businesses to deploy customized, advanced reasoning capabilities on a large scale.
“Our goal is to provide AI that’s not just smart but explainable, said Dave Ferrucci, Managing Director of the IAEAi. In a world where AI is driving high-stakes decisions, it’s essential for businesses to see the reasoning behind AI-driven insights. Without transparency, trust can’t be established, and responsibility becomes harder to assign. The IAEAi exists to ensure that AI systems in business are not only effective but also understandable and reliable.”
Through the IAEAi, CGE provides a platform for companies to participate in Proof of Value (POV) projects that showcase AI’s enterprise benefits and allow for shared learning from real-world insights. This approach enables the IAEAi to identify best practices and uncover potential risks, helping to shape an AI environment that balances innovation with responsibility.
Initially, the IAEAi will focus on areas such as supply chain operations, healthcare logistics, and public safety and security, with an overarching mission to enable companies to unlock AI’s potential responsibly.
